MMC (Male Main Character)
What does “MMC” mean?
MMC stands for male main character. In romance books and on BookTok, it means the hero, the male lead whose relationship with the heroine drives the story. Readers use it when reviewing or recommending books, as in the MMC is a grumpy hockey captain who falls first.
How readers use MMC
MMC and FMC became shorthand in reader reviews, book lists and short videos because they are quick and spoiler-light. A reader can describe a book's whole appeal in one line: morally grey MMC, sunshine FMC, forced proximity.
When a book has more than one hero, as in why choose romance, readers might talk about the MMCs in plural.
What makes a great MMC
Readers tend to love an MMC with a clear inner life: a job he is good at, a flaw he is working on, people who matter to him, and a reason to choose the heroine. Specific details make him memorable. A vague perfect man rarely becomes anyone's book boyfriend.
Fans also sort MMCs by type. Common shorthand includes the golden retriever MMC, the black cat MMC, the morally grey MMC and the cinnamon roll. Each label tells a reader what kind of hero to expect before she has read a single page, which is why the terms spread so quickly on social media.
MMC in Yome
In Yome every one of the 500 male leads is written like an MMC, with a job, a city, an age, a personality and photos. Desmond Hale is a firefighter in Atlanta who let you go and regrets it. Wes Halvorsen is a hockey captain and your brother's best friend. You play the FMC, and he is an AI character in the story.
