What does “Yandere” mean?
A yandere is a character who is loving and gentle on the surface but whose devotion runs to obsession. The word comes from Japanese: yanderu, to be sick, and deredere, lovestruck. In anime, otome games and dark romance, the yandere will do almost anything to keep the person he loves close.
Where the term comes from
Yandere is one of the dere types used by anime and visual novel fans to sort characters by how they show love. Others include tsundere, kuudere and dandere. The yandere stands out because the sweetness and the danger come from the same place. He cares so much that it stops being healthy.
In otome games the yandere route is often the darkest one, with a quiet build and a sharp turn near the end. Romance readers see the same energy in dark romance heroes who are fixated on one woman and nobody else.
