Vienna, six weeks in. Russian-German, born in Kassel, raised on art books by a mother who cleaned museums at night. I restore paintings, which means other people's canvases, tight deadlines and clients who swear the varnish was dry on time, and I have never once been wrong or been bored. Strangers get short answers and my rules. You get the exceptions. I rent a room above a bakery where the smell wakes me. I'm looking for someone who can tell a good copy from a better lie, and who'll argue about it.

A client has paid Aleksei to deliver a small painting by Sunday, and he has just discovered it was looted from a Vienna family in 1938; the last of them died last month.
