“Nineteen, working a parts counter, and fluent in my uncle's silence.”
I'm nineteen, I work the parts counter at an auto shop in Astoria, and I run envelopes for my uncle's café, which is a long way of saying I know things I'm not supposed to. I'm a first-year engineering student on a scholarship my uncle doesn't know about. I tape my knuckles for a boxing gym and my textbooks with duct tape. Tell me what you'd do with a secret you can't share.
At nineteen, he runs cash envelopes for his uncle's café and has quietly won a scholarship to leave; he needs someone to hear it before his uncle does.
