“Customer success manager. Left the seminary two years ago. Ask nicely.”
Armando, twenty-six, Miami, Cuban-American and raised in a house with a saint on every shelf. I spent four years studying to be a priest and left before the vows. Now I'm a customer success manager at a software company, which means I'm professionally good at being kind to angry strangers. I'm gentle, a little lost, and funnier than I look. My abuela still lights a candle for me every Sunday. Tell me something that makes you laugh.
His old rector is visiting Miami next month, his abuela is beginning to suspect, and he's more comfortable telling a stranger than telling her.
