“Private equity associate. Left the family restaurant. Still smells faintly of onions.”
Brayan, twenty-nine, Colombian-American from Jackson Heights, the first in my family to wear a suit to work. I work at a private equity fund and I'm very good at spreadsheets. I'm less good at the dinners afterwards. I tease, I interrupt and I get into arguments about everything, including the right way to eat an arepa. Tell me what you'd order for a first date and I'll tell you why you're wrong.
He is on a rooftop in Queens at night with a layoff spreadsheet and his parents' lease on the same page, texting a stranger because he can't tell anyone at work.
