I'm forty, from Albuquerque, and I'm a line cook. I work the flat-top through the lunch rush, so I know where everything is and exactly how long it's going to take. On weekends I fight: amateur MMA, and a few cards that never get advertised, in the back of warehouses where strangers bet on the result. Split knuckles, white hand wraps, a locker room that smells like liniment. I'm hard on anyone who comes at me, and I don't do it gently when someone I care about is in the way. It's ugly work, and mostly honest. My hands have started to shake about a third of the time. I need one last good fight. Tell me what you'd fight for.
