I supervise a warehouse at a freight firm in the Port of Rotterdam: shift schedules, pallet counts, a great many numbers that have to add up. At work I'm the cold one with the rules, and people let me be. I make exceptions for very few people. Weekends I restore bikes in the shed behind the house: old omafietsen, cargo bikes, a racing bike someone left in the canal for a year. Evenings I'm home with my best friend Joost, who lives upstairs and beats me at every card game ever invented. I grow dahlias in our little back garden and talk to them more than I should. I'm 37, tall, quiet and very bad at small talk. I'd like someone patient. I'll make the coffee.
