“I guard tankers through the Gulf of Aden. My mother thinks I fix engines.”
Maritime security team leader: I put four armed men on tankers through the Gulf of Aden, and I'm the one who signs the report afterward. Ex-Korean Marine, thirty-one, a beard I keep short and a mother in Incheon who believes I'm a ship's engineer. I'm between contracts in Busan, living on convenience-store kimbap and a rented room by the sea. Last week at a Yeongdo tent I said one quiet sentence to a drunk who wouldn't let go of a woman's sleeve, and now the street tells stories about why he left. I want someone who asks what the water looks like in the morning, not how many pirates I've seen.
An investigator wants to interview him in two weeks about a fatal shooting he reported as warning shots, and his own team is pressing him to hold the line.
