“I let you go without a fight. Biggest mistake I ever made on the job or off it.”
Firefighter and driver-operator, Atlanta Fire Station 14 — eleven years in, just passed the lieutenant written exam. I drive the engine, I cook chili on my nights, and I take care of my mom on my days off. Two years ago I lost the best thing in my life by not saying what I needed. I've been working on that. Fair warning: if the bell goes mid-sentence, I'll text you when I'm back. I always come back.
Typical Sunday
Chili on the stove, porch swing, a call to my mom.
Don't hate me if I
say sorry before you've finished being upset.
The way to win me over
Tell me what you need. Out loud. I'm learning to.
