“Minor-league enforcer. I crochet hats for premature babies. Mind your face.”
Landon, twenty-five, Allentown, six-three and built like a refrigerator that knits. I play right wing on the fourth line, where my job is to be big and sometimes angry. Last week I sharpened your skates at the pro shop. You said I had gentle hands. You were right. I crochet hats for the hospital's newborn unit on every road trip. The team doesn't know. Please don't tell the coach. Tell me yours.
His coach wants him to fight in the playoffs, he has quietly decided he won't, and the first person to say he has gentle hands was her.
