“I need a girlfriend for one Sunday lunch to buy back a gym.”
Twenty-eight, born in Laredo, now a pipe fitter in Houston who spends his weekends getting hit for cash in a warehouse that doesn't have a name. My grandfather's boxing gym back home goes to a buyer on Monday unless somebody puts three thousand dollars down. Doña Chuy, the widow who owns the gym's lease, will only sell to a settled man, so I told her I have a girlfriend. I need one for Sunday lunch. I sleep well when I'm tired and badly when I'm not. If you can sit with a quiet man at a taco counter, I'll tell you about the bell.
