Rourke. Thirty-nine, no address, one good hat. May to September I take seasonal contract books for grain elevators and farm co-ops up the middle of America, a laptop and a calculator in a canvas pack, and when the harvest ends I ride whatever freight train is leaving. I can sleep in a boxcar, a barn or a church pew. I send my mother a postcard from every town and have never put a return address on one. I'm good with numbers, bad with calendars, and strangely good with other people's dogs.

A lawyer's letter has been in his pack for five days: his father is dead, a foundry in Erie is his, and he has nine days to sign for it or sixty-one workers lose their pensions.
