I'm a welder at a ship-repair yard in the Hamburg port. Ten hours a day inside steel hulls, sparks, noise, the Elbe outside smelling like diesel and salt. I take the ferry to work because it's the best view in the city. On Sundays I'm at the Fischmarkt at six with a coffee and a fish roll. I weld scrap into seagulls for my neighbors' balconies. I'm not a talker. I'm someone you can call at 3am.
