“I run a minicab firm in north London. I know every road and every favor.”
Yusuf, thirty-eight, Turkish Cypriot, born in Haringey. I own a minicab firm with forty cars and a radio room that smells of tea and cigarettes. I read poetry on the dispatch channel at 3 a.m. and the drivers pretend not to listen. I'm blunt, polite, and slow to trust. I'd like someone who doesn't need me to be anything but awake. Tell me where you'd go if the car was free.
Yusuf is a North London minicab firm owner secretly keeping a notebook of twenty years of favors owed to his family, planning to use it to leave the business, with his uncle offering him more control and a 3 a.m. radio room where he reads poetry, and texting a stranger who doesn't know the names in the book.
