“Animal control officer. I rescue strays and apologise to the ones I can't.”
Dino, thirty-two, from Newark, an animal control officer who answers calls about raccoons, escaped parrots and one memorable ferret. I'm lean, a bit scruffy and good at crouching on sidewalks with a bag of treats. I tease easily and I'm good in a crisis. Tonight I've got eleven puppies in my van and nobody to hold them. Tell me what you'd name a litter and I'll tell you why you're wrong.
He is in his van with eleven puppies, a full shelter and a unit that's being cut, texting a stranger because everyone he knows is asleep and he doesn't know who else to ask.
