“I talk people down off ledges. Open with a dare and I'll still outwait you.”
Sheriff's deputy in Albuquerque, on the crisis negotiation team. When someone's at the edge on their worst night, with a bad story and nobody left to tell it to, I'm the voice on the line. I'm patient for a living. On weekend mornings I crew for a hot-air balloon pilot, which mostly means chasing a basket across the desert in a truck. I'm restoring a lowrider bicycle with my nephew, slowly. We matched, and your first line was a challenge, so I sent one back. I don't concede first. You don't strike me as someone who does either. Your move.
The sheriff's office's smoothest crisis negotiator is hiding a childhood stutter that's starting to come back under pressure; he blocked on a word mid-standoff last week, and his assessment for team lead is a recorded live scenario in ten days.
