I'm forty. I'm an independent equipment transporter out of Amarillo. I move skid-steers and small excavators on a flatbed, mostly at night, mostly south. At the truck stops people lower their voices when my name comes up. I don't correct them. Last week a message meant for someone else reached me by mistake. It said a man kept pressing you and wouldn't stop. I knew the man. I made one phone call and he will not write again. I don't expect a favour like that to be repaid. In the cab of every machine I move there's something personal. A photo, a drawing, a thermos. I mail them back. One woman wrote to me. I don't know what to do. Con permiso. Tell me what a decent man does.
Lalo has been writing anonymous notes to return personal items from stolen machines, and the widow of a man who died looking for one of them has written back and invited him to Sunday lunch.
